The New York City metropolitan area is the best area in the United States if you’re a professional sports fan.

There are nine, count them nine, professional sports teams in the New York City area — three National Hockey League teams, two Major League Baseball teams, two National Football League teams, and two National Basketball Association teams.

New York City has five boroughs. Four of them have sports teams. Manhattan is the home of the New York Knicks basketball team and the New York Rangers hockey team. Both teams play at Madison Square Garden, which is a historically famous sports venue because it has been the site of innumerable famous boxing matches as well as the National Invitation Tournament for college basketball teams and many other sports events.

The Bronx is the home of the most successful professional sports franchise ever — the New York Yankees baseball team. The Yankees have won 27 Major League Baseball titles and are playing in a completely rebuilt Yankee Stadium.

The borough of Queens is the home of the New York Mets baseball team. The Mets replaced the dear departed Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants baseball team, as New York City’s representative in the National League. The Mets are also playing in a new stadium, Citi Field, that replaced the famous Shea Stadium.

Last year, the borough of Brooklyn became the home of a major professional sports team for the first time since 1957 when the New Jersey Nets moved into the new Barclays Center. The New York Islanders’ hockey team, which is currently on Long Island, will move into the Barclays Center in 2015.

Staten Island is the only borough without a major league professional sports team, but you can head over to New Jersey for more sports action!
